Figures Amongst Classical Ruins

Oil on canvas, eighteenth century carved frame

45 x 98 cms
17 3/4 x 38 1/2 inches

This architectural landscape painter worked in the “Grand Tour” style popular at the time. Based in London at addresses in South Molton Street and Vine Street, Piccadilly, he produced views around Madrid, of London and capriccio classical scenes which he showed at exhibitions with titles such as “A fancy piece of ruins” and “ An ornamental piece to place over a chimney”.

These Pannini inspired scenes, particularly for a chimney piece or overdoor setting, were a speciality of Canter’s work. He exhibited twice at the Royal Academy and Society of Artists and 20 times at the Free Society.

Other exhibited titles include: “A piece of ruins”, “View of London from the Adelphi”, “A view of Arundel in Sussex with the castle belonging to the Duke of Norfolk” and “A view of the Convent of St Laurence, commonly called the Escorial in Spain”.
