Monger was an artist who apparently specialised in painting still lifes of dead game as these were the subject of his exhibited works, all of which were entitled simply “Dead Game”.

He was living at 26 Foley Place just off Portland Place in 1832 and then he moved to Ewell in Surrey and was still resident there in 1845 when he showed the last of his exhibited works at the Royal Society of British Artists.

He had a son, Arthur who was a sculptor and who exhibited three times at the Royal Academy.

J Mongers’ style is typical of the still life manner of the period and is redolent of such exponents of the form as Abraham Cooper, Stephen Taylor and Stephen Elmer.
