| MEARNS, A A MEARNS 19th Century English School “Spaniels” 30.5 x 40.5 cms Mearns was a sporting artist who exhibited at the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists between 1855 and1864. He lived at addresses in Lewisham in today`s south London and Faversham in Kent. Titles of exhibited works include “Clumber Spaniels”, “The Favourites”, “Pointers” and “The Water Spaniel”. He produced several pictures like this one of spaniels in woodland which are very redolent of George Armfield`s work and as there is not much difference in the quality of the two, some of Mearns` work has been passed off as his more famous contemporary.
