H. C. Smith was a painter of sporting scenes, landscapes, still lifes and animal portraits.
He was based at several different London addresses during his exhibiting career and it would appear that the majority of his work was commissioned by animal owners.

He exhibited six times at the Royal Academy, five at the British Institute and seven at the Royal Society of British Artists. These included titles such as “Portrait of Major, a favourite dog, the property of a gentleman”, “ Sketch of Carew, a favourite pug dog”, “Dead game”, “A river scene, cattle etc.” and “Ruffs and Reeves”
