Boland was born in the Belgian town of Spa and established himself as a well known painter of animals, portraits, genre scenes and landscapes.

He was a founder member of an Amsterdam group of young artists called “Als ik kan” – “If I am possible” – in 1883.

As well as dog portraiture, he produced a number of narrative animal pictures in rich and comfortable settings such as drawing and dining rooms and in this he was similar to his countryman, Charles van den Eycken and the Dutch artists Conradyn Cunaeus and Bernard te Gempt. He exhibited in Amsterdam, Brussels and Ghent.
