Jules Gelibert was born in Bognères-de-Bigorre on November 27th 1834. He was the son and pupil of Paul Gelibert who was an animal painter in oils and watercolours who exhibited at the Paris Salon.

Jules was also a specialist animal painter, particularly adept at portraying hunting dogs and hunting scenes. Some titles of his works include: “Two Hunting Dogs”, “Lost Fox”, “Spaniel bringing back a Rabbit”, “Hunting Scene” and “Wild Boar”.

He was a member of La Sociétaire des Artistes Français where he was awarded a medal in 1869 and a second class medal in 1883. He was also bestowed a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and 1900, and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d`Honneur.

Museums where works of his can be seen include: Bognères-“Studies of Dogs”, Cambrai –“Still Held” and St Etienne – “Pyrenean Sheep”.
