| WALLS, William WILLIAM WALLS 1860-1942 Scottish School Snow Leopard Oil on canvas, signed Born in Dunfermaline on 1st September 1860, Walls was a painter of animals in oils and watercolours. He studied at the Life School in the Royal Scottish Academy and the Antwerp Academy. He made many fine studies of wild animals in the zoological gardens of Antwerp and London and also painted in the Fen country and the Scottish Highlands. M Hardie in Watercolour Painting in Britain writes of his work “... show sympathetic and highly skilled craftsmanship. Fewer artists have shown greater appreciation of animal life or of its relationship with its landscape environment.” Walls lived at Corstorphine, Midlothian and taught animal painting at the Edinburgh College of Arts. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1901 and bestowed full membership in 1914 and to the Royal Society of Watercolourists in 1906. During his career he exhibited 592 paintings including 204 at the Royal Scottish Academy, 18 at the Royal Academy in London and 98 at the Glasgow Institute with titles such as: “ ‘A Hit or a Miss’? Jaguar and Macaws”, “The Foxes’ Lair”, “The Deer Stalker’s Companions” and “Jaguar Stalking”. He died on 28th June 1942.
