Elegant Figures promenading in the Grounds of a Château
Oil on canvas, signed and dated '49
Lemmens was a genre and landscape painter born in Senlis on 13th March 1821 and examples of his work have titles such as: "Diana and Nymphs", "Diana surprised by Actaeon", "Return of the Fishermen", "Windmill" and "Cavaliers crossing a Bridge in a mountainous Landscape".
He did his artistic training under Louis Lassalle and was eventually accepted into exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1821which he continued to do until 1866, just prior to his death the following year.
His style is typical of the French artistic tradition of the early 19th century, with excellent draughtsmanship and delightful landscapes and is closer to the earlier Empire paintings than the lighter, freer impressionism which was imminent.
His work can be seen in the Museum at St Etienne which has an interior scene and the Glasgow Museum which has a painting titled "The Farmyard".
