Johann Heinrich Strumpff was based in Amsterdam and painted portraits almost exclusively. He was a contemporary of Wybrandt Hendricks, Cornelis Troost and Jan Mauritsz. Quinkhardt and was influenced by other portrait painters working in Amsterdam at that time.
Strumpff specialised in executing finely detailed group portraits. Many were depicted in an open garden setting. In general, his drawing is precise and his choice of colours refined.
